The Anesthesia Care Team
East Carolina Anesthesia Associates is a physician partnership. All our physician partners are board certified anesthesiologists. An anesthesiologist is a physician practicing anesthesiology - a medical subspecialty. The American Board of Anesthesiology has defined anesthesiology as follows:
"Anesthesiology is defined as a continuity of patient care involving preoperative evaluation, intraoperative and postoperative care and the management of systems and personnel that support these activities. It is the practice of medicine dealing with but not limited to: the assessment of, consultation for, and preparation of patients for anesthesia. The relief and prevention of pain during and following surgical, obstetric, therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. The monitoring and maintenance of normal physiology during the perioperative period. Management of critically ill patients. The diagnosis and treatment of acute, chronic and cancer related pain. The clinical management and teaching of cardiac and pulmonary resuscitation. The evaluation of respiratory function and application of respiratory therapy. The conduct of clinical, translational, and basic research. The supervision, teaching and evaluation of performance of personnel, both medical and paramedical, involved in perioperative care. The administrative involvement in health care facilities and organizations, and medical schools necessary to implement these responsibilities."

Several peer reviewed medical studies have demonstrated the enhanced safety of the care team model in anesthesia and this is the approach that we utilize for your anesthesia care. The anesthesia care team, just like in all other areas of medicine consists of a physician and a nurse working together. The physician is a board certified anesthesiologist, and the nurse is a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA). A member of the anesthesia care team, either the anesthesiologist, nurse anesthetist, or both will be with you continuously throughout your procedure. Your anesthesiologist is present with an anesthetist during the start of the anesthetic, monitors the progress of your case, and is always immediately available for your care during the course of surgery and during the recovery period. This team approach ensures that you will have multiple members of a team with advanced, overlapping, and complementary skills present and immediately available during your anesthetic care.
